Adult ADHD

Optimum Psychiatry is one of only a few clinics in the country that offers rapid access to adult Attention Deficit Hyperactivity Disorder (ADHD) assessment and treatment services, with our treating Consultant Psychiatrists having specialist expertise in treating adult ADHD.

Individuals with adult ADHD may find it difficult to access services to help them with their condition, as treatment for this condition remains poorly resourced due to funding issues in the NHS. Research suggests that 1 in 5 children with ADHD will retain the full ADHD diagnosis by the age of 25, with symptoms continuing to persist well into adult life. Adult ADHD is characterised by symptoms of inattention, hyperactivity, and impulsivity. Typically, affected adults will present with some, or all of the following features:

  • Forgetfulness
  • Disorganisation
  • Procrastination (unable to complete tasks)
  • Impulsive decision making
  • Time management problems (persistent problems with lateness)
  • Unstable jobs and relationships
  • Criminal behaviour (motoring offences, illegal drug misuse)

In addition, adult ADHD patients may present with a distressing sensation of restlessness and a feeling of “always being on edge”. Patients may also present with co-morbid conditions such as Depression, Anxiety, Personality Disorder and Substance Misuse.

Although adult ADHD is a common behavioural disorder with associated significant impairments, it is very much a treatable condition. At Optimum Psychiatry, our Consultant Psychiatrists offer a full assessment, with a medication and treatment plan that will be best tailored to your needs, and which will offer the best possible chance of recovery.
